On Saturday, October 3rd, Guild Hall is celebrating its Fall Met: Live in HD Season with a Special Reception and Operatif featuring live performances, followed by a screening of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”
The event will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. with a commemorative reception and an exploration of composing in the 21st century with composer and conductor Victoria Bond and librettist Barbara Zinn Krieger. The morning will feature a preview of Bond’s original opera about Clara Schumann, including scenes performed by the two lead singers, Meredith Mecum and Benjamin Bloomfield as Clara and Robert Schumann. Bond, who is currently Principal Guest Conductor of Chamber Opera Chicago and a frequent pre-concert lecturer for the New York Philharmonic, has been commissioned by major orchestras, opera and dance companies worldwide.
At 1 p.m., Guild Hall will present The Met: Live in HD – Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.” Soprano Anna Netrebko stars as the Verdi heroine who sacrifices her own life for the love of a gypsy troubadour. Tenor Yonghoon Lee plays the doomed Manrico, with baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as his rival, and mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick as the mysterious gypsy with a problematic past. Angela Meade plays Leonora in later performances. Marco Armiliato conducts the Sir David McVicar’s Goya-inspired opera, which is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and San Francisco Opera Association.

“Ms. Netrebko sounded wonderful, singing with plush, penetrating sound and affecting character,” said Anthony Tommasini in a New York Times review of the production. “I have seldom heard a more vocally exquisite and powerfully expressive account of the aching, and very difficult, aria “D’amor sull’ali rosee,” when Leonora sends thoughts of longing to her beloved Manrico, who is in prison awaiting death.”
Reception and Presentation tickets are $50. Tickets to the screening of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” are $22 for non-members, $20 for members and $15 for students.
