Steeped in tradition, history, and familiarity, a refurbished Sagaponack General Store has reopened its doors. Though still on the same footprint, the renovated establishment feels larger and more spacious, with an open layout and abundant natural light that adds warmth and charm. It now shares space with the newly restored historic Post Office at 542 Sagg Main Street in Sagaponack, located between Sagaponack Road and Hedges Lane, just south of the Sagaponack Common School.
The original 1878 building was meticulously moved 15 feet back from Sagg Main Street and now features a welcoming new porch. The Post Office, located there as well, has its own handicapped-accessible entrance. While construction is complete, the Post Office has not yet reopened to the public.
Sagaponack General Store General Manager Gabby Green kindly took a few moments from her busy schedule—training staff, organizing, and implementing new protocols—to speak with Hamptons.com. She expressed great enthusiasm for how new owner Mindy Green has transformed the store, calling it “truly epic.”
When asked about the most pleasant surprise since reopening, Ms. Green shared, “Everyone’s reaction has just been unbelievable. Everyone walks in the door, and they’re so delighted that we’re here. We like to think we have something for everyone. People just seem really happy to be here.”
There are new features outside the store as well. Ms. Green explained, “So there are no tables or chairs in the back now. We have benches back there, and as you can see, we’re still in the midst of landscaping. There wasn’t anything in the back before—just a few benches out front.”
The new landscaping has made the rear of the store a lovely retreat. A large, newly installed window wall at the back allows people seated outdoors to enjoy the interior view, while a white gravel path adds an appealing aesthetic. One might imagine these benches becoming a peaceful oasis—perfect for sipping coffee, chatting, checking your phone, or enjoying the scenery. The surrounding property’s view is pure Sagaponack. The author admits that in 25 years of visiting, he had never explored the serene beauty behind the store.
Ms. Green also noted, “Right now, we’re open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. That may expand to seven days a week, but for now, we’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays.”
The menu is not yet available online, as it’s still evolving. “…We’re adding things every day,” Ms. Green said. “For now, it’s mostly grab-and-go. Nothing is made to order. We have drinks, frozen yogurt, candy, and on the hot food side, there are premade breakfast sandwiches in the morning—like a buttermilk biscuit with soufflé egg, cheese, and ham (or without). We also have rotisserie chickens with hot sides, a selection of pastries, sandwiches, salads, and soups.” Note: All items are premade; custom orders are not currently offered.
Also new is the staff. Tyler Simpson, “Gwuantsa,” and Yuli Rodriguez were sporting new Sagaponack General Store swag and enthusiastic smiles, offering helpful service. Their energy added to the store’s vibrant reopening vibe.
Visitors will be impressed by the open, airy layout and cleverly designed counters and shelving—blending a nostalgic touch of the past with modern functionality. The beautiful wooden floors, oak-paneled walls, and high barn-style ceiling with double-height windows evoke a unique charm, while modern lighting adds brightness and clarity.
Quite frankly, it’s worth stopping in to experience the inviting atmosphere created by the new ownership, enhancing the warmth and utility of the store’s pre-renovation days. Judging by the buzz and positive feedback, the renovation of the Sagaponack General Store is a job exceptionally well done.
