Yoga and Live Music with Ashley McGee in Montauk

Ashley McGee has heard every excuse as to why someone has avoided the practice of yoga with “I’m not flexible enough” being one of the primary reasons. That’s exactly why she has partnered with Montauk Beach House and Corey’s Wave to host a “come one, come all” event on Thursday, September 23 from 5-6 p.m. There will be yoga, surfing, and live music with the primary goal of finding control, grace, and ease.

McGee created this event with the goal of helping to evolve the way people see the practice. Surprisingly, many pro surfers are devoted to yoga, including Gerry Lopez and Kelly Slater. Gerry Lopez believes that surfing and yoga are one and the same and that religiously practicing yoga can strengthen one’s sport as a surfer. McGee is eager to create this unique experience for the surfing community on the East End where they can feel comfortable practicing together.

There will be live music by Gian Carlo Feleppa (sitar, autoharp, synthesizers), Dalton Portella (guitar synth, percussion), James Ryan (rhythm machine, nature), and Everest Bond (handpan, percussion).

Now there’s no excuse to not try yoga if you’ve been curious about it or wanted to improve your practice. Ashley McGee is creating a safe place for all to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Montauk as a community.

Q: As someone who dedicates their life to the practice of yoga, what do you love most about it?

A: One of the things I love most about Yoga is that it is an endless river of knowledge and inspiration. Even when my soul leaves this physical body, I still will not know everything there is to know about Yoga and I’d imagine any Yoga teacher or guru way beyond my years would say the same. I’m incredibly inspired by turning inward and observing, inquiry of the subtle, and anatomical alignment. Legendary Yoga guru, B.K.S. Iyengar describes how alignment to the body is alignment to the soul.

Q: Yoga and surfing are two activities that many people would not put together. What do both practices have in common?
A: Taking inspiration from legendary Gerry Lopez who’s been surfing for 55 years and practicing yoga for 40+ years, he believes surfing and Yoga are one and the same and the benefits that practicing Yoga can have on surfing are far reaching. He describes how surfing and practicing Yoga aim to tap into the same energy force and feelings; and, that the Hawaiians have been accessing it through surfing while Yogis have been accessing it through breath.
