On Sunday, August 28th Red Jacket Books in Westhampton Beach hosted a book signing by local author Shay Siegel.
Ms. Siegel was on hand to sign copies of her first novel, Fractured. The book is intended for older teens and young adults age 16+. It deals with different issues that teens face today, the author explains, such as mental health awareness, toxic masculinity and peer pressure.
The book’s main character, Mason Vance, is a high school football player who injures his wrist; as he is recovering from the injury he is also put on a path to self discovery.
Ms. Siegel explains that the inspiration for the book came when she broke her own wrist on her 25th birthday. She explains, “as I was healing, I started thinking a lot about physical injuries that people can see and how differently they are treated than emotional or psychological ‘injuries’ that cannot be seen. This theme of comparing different types of literal and metaphysical ‘fractures’ to one another is present throughout the book.”
Several signed copies of Fractured are available for purchase at Red Jacket Books.
Ms. Siegel has also published a book of poetry, Bleeding Flowers, which was also available at the signing event.

Red Jacket Books, founded by Ben Vengroff, is located on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. A lover of reading, writing and everything in between, Mr. Vengroff has created a true local bookstore, where he and his staff feature “staff picks” — books they love — and display on their shelves. It’s the kind of bookstore that’s hard to find these days, a more personal, intimate place that’s an entirely different experience from Amazon or even a huge store like Barnes & Noble. Red Jacket Books is also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Their website is redjacketbooks.com
