The MightyMan Triathlon will return to Montauk at Fort Pond this Sunday morning, October 2nd.
The race will feature several categories, including three different distances: a sprint triathlon, which is a 750 meter swim, 17 mile bike, and 5k run, an Olympic distance race with a 1500 meter swim, 40k bike, and a 10k run, and a Half Iron Distance race which includes a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. Each race has the individual option to complete the entire course, and there is also the AquaBike, BikeRun, and a relay option.
Vicki Ventura from EventPower Long Island spoke more about the race, the mission of MightyMan, and what participants can expect.
MightyMan was started back in 2004 by Chris Pfund and the late Steve Tarpinian. Vicki and Chris have continued the mission and they keep it at the forefront of their work. Vicki says, “We are local and proud! Our goal is to have a safe event and a positive impact in the community. After the race we do a course wide clean up where we go out in multiple vehicles, bike or run on the course, and pick up any debris that we left behind or that we find. We welcome organizations to be part of the event and we encourage participants to shop local and stay local.”
Vicki discussed the location of the event, expressing that it is what sets it apart from other races throughout the year. She says, “Once you come down the hill on 27 and enter the Village you are welcomed with ocean views. The race takes place in a beautiful location, and not only do we have an incredible bike and run course that goes past the historical Lighthouse and includes views of Navy Beach, but you are surrounded by restaurants and hotels, which makes the race a weekend getaway for most racers, and everything is within walking distance.”
MightyMan Montauk is expected to be a fun weekend event during a beautiful and scenic time of year in the Hamptons. Vicki mentioned that participants can anticipate a well-organized race with incredible views, and there will also be an area for kids to make signs for participants, as well as face painting while they wait.
Vicki is most looking forward to the people at the event. She says, “You see the same people come out to Montauk year after year as part of a tradition and then you get to meet new people, and everyone has their own story on what got them to sign up and bring them to the MightyMan Finish Line!”
The race started in 2004 and has been growing every year since. However, there has been a decline in participant numbers since Covid, which is the case all across Long Island, but MightyMan aims to build back up by enhancing the racers’ experience. And going forward, they will continue to provide a safe event for the racers, a fun event for the spectators, and an event that ultimately benefits the community.
Vicki encourages the community to get involved with MightyMan’s mission. She says, “Community organizations are welcome to be part of the event. Concerned Citizens of Montauk who have been helping to keep Montauk’s waters clean will be setting up a tent at the race and explain their projects with the participants. We welcome organizations to be involved and any individuals or groups to volunteer so that they can be part of the excitement.”
Sunday’s MightyMan race is sure to be a fun-filled day and a memorable experience! Hamptons locals and those from out of town will come together for a common cause and interest, sure to make the event a great success!
