Springs Brewery, Local Beer & the Power of Place

Springs Brewery

Lindsay Reichart and Gunnar Burke believe in the power of place…specifically, their home in Springs, East Hampton. Homebrewing together since 2014, Lindsay and Gunnar founded Springs Brewery together in 2021. They brew modern ales and traditional lagers that are accessible, delightful, and true to place. Brewing is their passion, and the proof is in the can. Be sure to look (or ask) for Springs Brewery in the beer aisles and at the bar around the Hamptons—you’ll be glad you did!

Active members of the East End community and motivated to grow their business, don’t be surprised to see Springs beers at events this Fall. This summer, they partnered with Sagaponack Farm Distillery to craft beer-inspired cocktails. I recently ran into Lindsay and Gunnar at the “Doubles Diner” pop-up dinner at Doubles in Amagansett. Maybe it was because I kept gushing over how much I loved the complexity and delicate flavors in their new brew, Promised Land (Pale Ale). They were even happy to enlighten me on the nuanced distinctions between a pilsner and a Kolsch!

For nearly 15 years, Lindsay and Gunnar have patiently, lovingly, painstakingly honed their craft to understand the science and history behind brewing. Today, Springs Brewery is a leader in cultivating and developing local brewing culture. While Long Island wine has an established reputation and others try to capitalize on the “craft beer market,” Springs Brewery’s plans for a brick-and-mortar brewery are founded on a passion for community and a love of beer.

Lazy Lightning (IPA), their first flagship brew, has been an instant hit. Smooth, crisp, and bold-not-bitter, it’s perfect for the beach, cocktail parties, and dinner. How refreshing to try an IPA with subtlety and well-rounded flavor profiles—it doesn’t have to shout to be heard. (A few years ago, I swore off beer named with hop-related puns. There are more than I can count, plus I wouldn’t want to give them any free publicity. Luckily, Springs Brewery doesn’t rely on low-hanging fruit for its beer names.) I digress but to be clear—I love this beer.

Springs Brewery has an ever-growing library of brews and shows no signs of slowing down. Never Left, Wasn’t Here (Pale Ale) is a crisp, full-bodied but not bitter pale ale. It’s perfect for days in the sun as well as nights by the fire. All Illusion (8% Double India Pale Ale) is creamy, pillowy soft, and loaded with the finest Nelson hops and Citra. Bursting with notes of lychee, gooseberries, melon, and all things ripe and tropical. Louse (4.7% Pilsner) German style pils with Hallertau and Tettnang hops on German pilsner malt. Crisp, clean, thirst-quenching, and delicious.

Eagerly planning for their future brewery in Springs, all of the residents I spoke to were delighted to hear that a brewery is likely on the way. Lindsay and Gunnar are currently looking for the right permanent location in Springs that best serves the community. Still, much of their beer’s ingredients are locally sourced and they are canned in Riverhead. For my money, there are few things better than a fresh beer brewed by locals for their community.

Unsurprisingly with beer, this delicious, distribution has grown rapidly in the years since they started brewing. You can find Springs’ beer across the East End, North Fork, up island, and New York City. Crafting beer is an art and so is the packaging. Designed by local artists, their branding reflects their beer—bright, bold, and original. They drop new merch all the time, so make sure you check their website for some sweet Springs swag!
