Four of the 25 Hamptons Doc Fest Films Named to Oscar Documentary Shortlists

Hamptons Doc Fest, which just completed its 15^th annual documentary film festival at the Sag Harbor Cinema and Bay Street Theater, is pleased to announce that four of the 25 films it screened and presented awards to on December 1-6 were named to the Oscars Shortlist on December 21 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said Hamptons Doc Fest executive director Jacqui Lofaro and artistic director Karen Arikian. The Oscar Shortlists include 15 films in each of 10 categories.

In the Documentary Feature Film category, three of the films screened at Hamptons Doc Fest were among the 15 on the Shortlist—

“Last Flight Home” directed by award-winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner, about her father Eli Timoner, founder of Air Florida, and his lovingly-told path to end his life, which received the 2022 HDF Filmmaker Impact Award;

“The Territory,” directed by Alex Pritz, about the tireless fight of the indigenous Uru-eu-wau-wau people to prevent the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon, which was honored with the HDF National Geographic Documentary Films Tribute Award;

and “All That Breathes,” a meditative film directed by award-winning Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen, about two brothers in New Delhi, India who rescue thousands of black kite birds, which served as this year’s HDF Closing Night Film.

In the Documentary Short Film category, one of the short films screened at Hamptons Doc Fest was among the 15 on the Oscars Shortlist—“The Flagmakers” (35 min.) directed by award-winning filmmakers Sharon Liese and Cynthia Wade, about the immigrants and refugees who work at the Wisconsin factory which is the largest maker of American flags, a film which also served as part of the HDF National Geographic Documentary Films Tribute Award.

From the Shortlists, on January 24 the lists of Oscar “nominees” in the 10 categories will be named, with the winners awarded their Oscars at the 95^th annual Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 12, 8 p.m. on ABC.
