“Magical Realism” Comes To East Hampton

Janet Lehr Fine Arts’ 2018 season will commence with Magical Realism, featuring the work of Shimon Okshteyn, a “post pop” personal reality.

“Shimon Okshteyn, a barometer of our time, points to aesthetic beauty, technical brilliance, and the narrative of art history as the building blocks of his life and art. In the mode of big bold painters, the work of Shimon Okshteyn astounds,” Adam Umbach of Janet Lehr Fine Arts reflected.

Before emigrating from Russia, Okshteyn participated in more than twenty group and solo exhibitions in major museums and public galleries throughout the Soviet Union between 1972 and 1979. After arriving in New York, he attracted the eye of Ivan Karp of O.K. Harris Gallery – who was highly concerned with the execution of art. Masterful execution, a gimlet-keen eye and boundless imagination are the telltale signs of Okshteyn’s work. His imagination is captivated by the bewildering variety of American life and results in aesthetic beauty, technical brilliance, and a narrative art history.

His artwork, considered irresistibly attractive to the eye, has been exhibited in Stefan Stux Gallery, O.K. Harris Gallery, Mabat Gallery in Tel Aviv, Marty Margulies and Cricket Taplin Gallery in Miami, the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Gallery of London, MOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 26 from 8 to 10 pm. The exhibition will remain on view through Wednesday, June 13.
