In an era where change is not just inevitable but often sought after, Inlet Seafood Dock & Restaurant in Montauk remains a tranquil haven and reminder of the beauty of consistency. A staple of the Montauk dining scene for years, The Inlet stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of a relaxed, family-friendly environment paired with an unmatched view of the ocean.
Just reopened for the 2024 season, their 18th season, my recent visit to this cherished establishment not only satisfied my seafood cravings but also a much-needed reminder that some things in Montauk haven’t changed—and that’s a good thing.
With views of Block Island Sound from every table, the Inlet’s mission is deeply rooted in respect and love for the Hamptons waters. “Respect the Ocean, Harvest the Bounty, Feed the People,” a simple yet profound statement, captures the essence of what The Inlet is all about.
This ethos was palpable during my dinner, which coincided with a heartwarming “Kids eat free” promotion—available every Sunday. It was a delightful sight, families coming together, filling the large dining area adorned with an old-timey Montauk vibe, echoing laughter and stories, a scene reminiscent of a bygone era.
The atmosphere is unpretentiously casual, yet there’s an underlying sophistication in how The Inlet marries the laid-back ambiance with impeccable service and culinary excellence. The food, as fresh as it gets, speaks volumes of the restaurant’s commitment to quality.
Just show up, they don’t take reservations, and it’s first come, first serve, so get there early so you can get a window seat! On Thursdays, they have a local discount, and, if dinner’s not your thing, the bar area is warmed by a fireplace.
With a fleet of six fishing vessels, you know the seafood on your plate is as fresh as you’ll get. The ocean-to-table approach is not just delicious, but a notable effort to respect the ocean and the maritime environment at large.
“Fish just tastes different when it was just swimming, trust us,” says The Inlet website. After my dinner, can’t argue with that. Easily the best fish & chips in the Hamptons. Plus, the sushi is unreal and as gorgeous as it is delicious.
As the days stretch longer, the opportunity to witness the breathtaking sunsets from The Inlet becomes an experience in itself. Missing out on this spectacle is akin to missing a piece of Montauk’s soul—vibrant hues painting the sky, reflecting on the water, providing a backdrop that elevates your dining experience.
The essence of casual dining in the Hamptons is perfectly encapsulated at The Inlet—delicious food, luminous views, and the melody of laughter from friends and families. Time seems to slow, allowing guests to savor each moment, each bite, and each sunset. In a world that constantly moves forward, The Inlet stands as a cherished reminder of the joys found in simplicity, stability, and community.
The Inlet stands as a beacon of Montauk’s enduring charm, a place where the spirit of the community is as nourishing as the food. It embodies the rare blend of respecting tradition while welcoming everyone with open arms, a Hamptons gem where the best of Montauk’s past and present meet.
As the world changes, so does Montauk, but it’s a real comfort to find places like The Inlet remain, offering not just a meal, but an experience steeped in the timeless essence of Montauk.
