Parrish Art Museum Celebrating 5th Anniversary At Water Mill Location

The Parrish Art Museum opened its Water Mill location on November 12, 2012, and to celebrate its fifth anniversary will be presenting a special weekend of events from Friday, November 10 to Sunday, November 12. This will include the opening of its latest exhibit, Five and Forward, which will remain on view until October 31, 2018.

“It is hard to believe that we opened to the public five years ago,” remarked Terrie Sultan, Director of the museum. “This has been a transformational period for the Museum and the community, and we are thrilled to both celebrate this accomplishment and look to the future.”

The weekend kicks off on Friday at 6 p.m. with The Impact of Architecture, a discussion between Sultan and a special guest from the architecture community as part of the Museum’s Inter-Sections: The Architect in Conversation series.

The following afternoon, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a special museum Members’ Reception that includes a preview of the latest exhibition and talks with artists. Later that evening, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Parrish will host a 5th Anniversary Cocktail Party, which will feature music from the Quintet of the Americas. The wind instruments quintet will perform Watercolors, a work originally composed by Nell Shaw Cohen for the museum’s opening in 2012.

On Sunday, there will be events all day and free admission for the public. Activities are scheduled to begin at noon and include community art projects led by the artists, art workshops for families, docent-led tours of the galleries, performances by a marimba band, and refreshments.

The new exhibition, Five and Forward, highlights artists James Brooks, Alan Shields, and William Merritt Chase. These artists were selected as their work exemplifies “major trends, themes, and concepts in American art history, and underscores the ongoing artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End.”

Rashid Johnson, a New York City based artist, will act as guest curator for the new exhibit and created a special gallery of works handpicked by him from the museum’s collections. Johnson has worked with photography, sculpture, and mixed media installations.

The Parrish Art Museum sits on fourteen acres in Water Mill. Since its opening, the museum has had over 100 installations and exhibits, 421 acquisitions, and now houses over 3,000 works. The structures design was overseen by Sultan and constructed by Herzog and de Meuron, a Swiss architecture firm.

The museum’s mission is to “foster connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, the presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in-residence.”
