18th Annual Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk To Raise Awareness And Funds For Local Breast Cancer Organizations

Looking for something fun to do on a crisp, autumn morning? The 18th Annual Shelter Island 5K run/walk to be held on Saturday, October 21 at 11 a.m. is a great chance to exercise, give back, and take in the beautiful sights of Shelter Island. All proceeds will go towards the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, the Coalition for Women’s Breast Health at Southampton Hospital, and Lucia’s Angels.

The race starts at Crescent Beach and will end in a lovely, scenic stretch along the Peconic River to Sunset Beach. There will be awards for the top female finishers, top male finishers, first place breast cancer survivor walker, and first place breast cancer survivor runner. For those looking to make it a fun outing with family and friends, prizes will be given out to the team that has the most members.

Registration for the 5K is open between 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. on the day of the race and shuttles will be running between the ferry to registration until 1 p.m. The first 500 walkers and runners to arrive will receive a race shirt and goody bag. Each participant can also take free race photos and attend a stretching session before the walk/run.

There will be a barbeque with chili, desserts, and more after the race, to which all participants are invited. All are welcome, including any four-legged friends and strollers. Winning raffle tickets will be picked at the barbeque, with all proceeds going towards Lucia’s Angels.

Registration can be completed online or by mail. Fees range from $10 to $40, depending on the age of the participant and whether registration is completed in advance or the day of the race.

The North Fork Breast Health Coalition’s mission is “to encourage and assist in the prevention, early intervention, and cure of breast cancer through advocacy, awareness, networking, and research.” The Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, a local, volunteer-driven group, is committed to “early detection and empowerment to bring about better health care and an improved quality of life.” Lucia’s Angels is dedicated to “helping women and families on Eastern Long Island with late-stage women’s cancers including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and uterine cancer.”
