SagTown Coffee Reopens Brewing Up A Terrific Community Response

After being closed for nearly eight months as a result of the horrible December 16, 2016 fire that consumed not only the iconic Sag Harbor Cinema, but other favorite local shops and businesses, SagTown Coffee reopened earlier this August, to an “Overwhelming response from the community. We are all super excited and everyone just seems really happy to have us back,” Cory Clark, manager of SagTown Coffee, enthusiastically expressed.

Opened in 2012, and owned by Shane Dyckman, the go to place for a cup of Joe suffered tremendous smoke damage as a result of the fire, and Dyckman used the total rebuild opportunity to expand the shop into the space that previously housed the Collette Luxury Consignment store. The new space was designed by Dyckman along with Baranovich Architects, and Clark simply stated, “We have an additional 400 square feet, and have now doubled in size.” The shop has expanded closer to Main Street from its alleyway location.

Opened from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily according to Clark, and located at 78 Main Street, the shop has expanded not only its space and coffee options, but now offers “sandwiches, salads and pizzas,” along with take away coffee and tea products, and merchandise.

As stated on their website, “Simplicity, Artistry, Greatness, Talent, Optimism, Worthiness, Nuance. The roots represent our community – strong, and unstoppable, firm in their beliefs and influenced by the beautiful nature surrounding us in our staunchly rooted community. The words to live by reflect our commitment to the passion we have towards making this a great place to BE,” SagTown Coffee’s owner, manager and staff of 12 are happily percolating along in their new digs.

For the past three years, SagTown Coffee has also had a shop in Montauk, but Sag Harbor residents and visitors alike are happy to see that the shop reopened in the ‘hood, and continues its artsy community vibe as a few of the businesses impacted by the fire have chosen not to reopen and/or have relocated, such as the RJD Gallery which is now located in Bridgehampton.

Following the fire, and in its efforts to purchase and rebuild the Cinema, the Sag Harbor Partnership (formed five years ago and instrumental in raising the funds used for the Village Park at the end of Main Street), has raised “Approximately $5.5 million in pledges and/or contributions,” according to attorney Susan Mead.

A full-time resident of Sag Harbor, Mead is the Treasurer of the Partnership and revealed, “The cost to purchase the Cinema is approximately $2.4 million, and we will need approximately $5 million to restore it. Over 80 percent of what we have raised has been generated by contributions and pledges of $1,000 or under.”

Mead went on to express, “That commitment and outpouring of support from not only residents and visitors to Sag Harbor is absolutely stunning, and we are continuing our fund raising efforts and events, with many events planned for the next two months.”

Finally, as for that iconic sign, Mead relayed, “The sign is being boarded by the same wonderful gentlemen who is repairing it.”

So let’s hope soon, one will have the ability to grab a latte and nibble at SagTown Coffee and then head over to the Cinema to catch a film.

I first noticed 55 Wickatuck Drive in Sag Harbor because the gorgeously redesigned home had a real point of view—calm, edited, and quietly specific. That is, it felt like a home, not a project. The styling is intentional without feeling staged: elevated finishes, relaxed coastal ease, a level of cohesion that shows someone cared about the home’s full experience, not just the high-impact moments.

Even after the home sold, something about the property stayed with me. Luckily for me, the real estate agent who sold the property, Sarah Doud, picks up her phone when I call (to be fair, she would probably answer your call, too). She told me the renovation and interiors were designed by STUDIOBKM and Brian K. Mims, a studio approach centered on luxury that simplifies living rather than complicating it. The spaces feel restorative, considered, and durable enough to handle real life in the Hamptons: sandy feet, wet dogs, last-minute guests, all of it.

Which event are you heading to first?
  • While there are many floral events taking place in the Hamptons, there is only one held at the renowned Wƶlffer Estate that sells out immediately: Share the Harvest Farm’s Floral Arranging Class.

Share The Harvest Farm is a local non-profit that believes everyone deserves access to wholesome, locally grown food. Their farm, located at 55 Long Lane in East Hampton, provides fresh vegetables to local food pantries, women’s shelters, low-income senior housing facilities, childcare centers, and more.

Guests were greeted with a glass of wine and treated to a decadent charcuterie spread, stunning flower bars, and a beautiful view of the vineyard.

The morning kicked off with remarks by Share the Harvest’s Executive Director, Meredith Arm, ā€œI’m so grateful to Wƶlffer Estate for hosting us in this beautiful space, and to May Zegarelli of Ocean Fog Farm for sharing her talent and creativity with our guests. This event is especially meaningful to us, as it was the first event May and I ever did together, and four years later, it continues to bring people together in such a joyful way. We’re grateful to everyone for being here today, as proceeds from ticket sales support Share the Harvest Farm and our mission to fight food insecurity on the East End.ā€
