Legendary filmmaker Jonas Mekas, 95, will present images he captured at the Andy Warhol estate in Montauk in August of 1972 at the Boo-Hooray Summer Rental gallery in Montauk. The eye-catching photographs, which make their debut on Saturday, July 1, include notable subjects like Jaqueline Kennedy, John Kennedy, Jr., Caroline Kennedy, Peter Beard, Lee Radziwill, and the infamous Andy Warhol. The exhibition will be on view through Friday, July 14. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 1 from 4 to 6 p.m.
“I met Jonas researching the book I made on the Velvet Underground via Lou Reed, who was a great admirer of Jonas,” said Boo-Hooray’s Johan Kugelberg. “Jonas is one of the smartest and most inspiring people I’ve ever met. He is a next-level enthusiast with an illuminating curiosity and spontaneity.”
The photographs come from a special time when Caroline and John Kennedy Jr. spent the summer of 1972 in Montauk. Their cousins Anthony and Tina Radziwill joined them in an old beach house Lee Radziwill had rented from Andy Warhol. The summer was filled with happiness and continuous celebrations of life and friendships. These emotions are clearly portrayed in Mekas’ photography.

“My happiest memories of Montauk come from the summer of 1972 which I spent at the Warhol estate with the Kennedy children, Peter Beard, Lee Radziwill, and, of course, Andy himself,” Mekas explained. “We all had great time that summer at the seashore, the harbor of Montauk, and the old seashore house that had survived so many storms.”
Mekas’ exhibition will feature a few of the most historically significant individuals to American culture in a pure and personal nature. It’s certainly not one to miss.
