From styling the strands of Kim Kardashian to transforming everyday women live on TV, Chris Appleton isn’t just creating looks, he’s creating moments. The celebrity hairstylist opens up about his rise to the top, what makes a look truly memorable, and why there’s no place more iconic in the summer than the Hamptons.
Chris, you’ve become one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the world, but let’s go back. What first drew you to hair?
I was dyslexic, so I had a hard time in school and I wasn’t into sports. I started out doing my mum’s hair, and I saw her reaction when I would finish. Her shoulders were back, and she felt good about herself; giving women that feeling was what drew me to doing hair. I could make them feel amazing just by sitting in my chair.
What was your first big break, and how did it come about?
I think it was when I won BBC’s Young Hairdresser of the Year in 2010. I couldn’t believe I won, and I realized I could make a career of this.
What’s your creative process like when working with a new client or for a major event?
It usually depends on the client. More often than not, it’s a collaborative effort between myself, the client, and the stylist.
How did you first meet Kim Kardashian?
She called me to do her hair and we clicked instantly!
What has it been like to be a part of her style evolution?
I call Kim my muse because she is so open to trying something new and different. We both love pushing boundaries, and it just opens me up creatively to keep things interesting.
Favorite Kim look ever?
Oh, that’s like picking a favorite child. It’s so hard to pick just one.
What about Jennifer Lopez?
Jennifer messaged me on Instagram, which is so crazy! Initially I thought it was a scam, but then she messaged again. Just when you think no one is watching, they are, so keep showing up and doing great work because you never know.
You’ve had such a meteoric rise in the industry. Was there a specific moment when you thought, “I’ve made it”?
You know I’ve never felt like I’ve made it. I’m always striving to be better, but I’m thankful for the amazing moments I’ve had in my career thus far.
What do you think makes a hairstyle truly memorable?
I think it’s that perfect mix of originality, timelessness, and cultural impact. It’s not just about how it looks—it’s how it makes people feel, how it defines a moment, and how it keeps getting referenced, reimagined, and remembered.
You’ve become a celebrity in your own right. How do you balance being “Chris Appleton the artist” vs. “Chris Appleton the brand”?
It’s all about balance. I’m first and foremost an artist, but as a brand, I have to stay consistent and intentional. I make sure to keep that creativity alive while representing who I am.
Big news in the beauty biz is that L’Oréal acquired haircare brand Color Wow in June. Tell us about your role at Color Wow, and the three products everyone should own from the line!
I am the global director of Color Wow, and my top-three products are definitely Dream Coat because it coats the hair and keeps out moisture, keeping the hair frizz-free; my Money Masque for treating the hair; and the Color Security Shampoo is tried and true, and it keeps the scalp clean and free from buildup.
What grounds you while dealing with the chaos of the beauty and celebrity world?
My family, especially my kids.
What’s one part of your daily routine you never skip, beauty-related or otherwise?
I love keeping my workouts in my daily routine; they keep me feeling grounded and clear-headed.
You’re here with us this summer in the Hamptons. What do you love most about it?
Nothing says iconic summer more than the Hamptons. I love the beach out here, the good food, and that laid-back coastal vibe. It’s the kind of place where time slows down in the best way.
Do you take on new clients? What does that process look like?
Yes, I’m always open to working with someone new. Sometimes, I see someone and reach out and sometimes they reach out to me, it just depends.
Tell us about contributing to both the Today show and The Drew Barrymore Show, and your favorite part about contributing on-air?
I’m a contributor to the Today show and lifestyle contributor to The Drew Barrymore Show. I love my time with both casts. I love transforming women on live TV and giving them the opportunity to change their look and feel good.
What’s next for you? Anything you can tease for Spotlight readers?
I have something I’m looking forward to sharing soon. I think it will help, inspire, and motivate, and I poured my soul into it, so I’m excited to share it with you all in good time.
What’s something we’d be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a huge daredevil. I don’t shy away from risk-taking
