What started as a personal idea rooted in love and connection has evolved into a refined jewelry brand that blends meaning with timeless design. Founded by Melanie Bronfman, Stella James was created to offer something more than traditional fine jewelry with pieces that feel personal and meaningful while maintaining an elevated aesthetic meant to be worn every day.
Inspired by both New York’s sophistication and the relaxed elegance of the Hamptons, the brand balances strength and softness. Signature diamond letter pieces have become a defining element of the collection, designed to represent identity, memory, and the people we carry with us.
As Stella James continues to grow, Melanie remains focused on craftsmanship, storytelling, and creating pieces that feel both modern and lasting. She spoke more about the inspiration behind the brand, her design philosophy, and how Stella James fits seamlessly into everyday style from city life to summer days out East.
Can you share the story behind Stella James, when you launched, and what inspired you to create the brand?
MB: Stella James was born from a deeply personal place. I wanted to create something that allowed me to carry a symbol of the people I love most with me, every day. What began as a personal idea designing a meaningful piece tied to my children evolved into a brand rooted in emotion, craftsmanship, and timeless design. We launched with the intention of creating jewelry that doesn’t just look beautiful, but feels significant.
The brand is named after your children—how did that personal connection shape the vision and meaning behind the collection?
MB: Naming the brand after my children made it incredibly intentional. It’s not just a name, it’s the heart of everything we create. The collection reflects love, connection, and legacy. Every piece is designed to hold meaning, whether it represents a child, a partner, or a moment in time. It’s about keeping what matters most close to you.
What gap did you see in the jewelry market that led you to create your signature diamond letter pieces?
MB: I felt that personalized jewelry often lacked refinement, while fine jewelry didn’t always feel personal. There was a gap between emotional meaning and elevated design. I wanted to bridge that to create pieces that are deeply personal but crafted with the same level of sophistication and quality as high jewelry. The letter shaped diamonds became our signature because they embody both identity and elegance.
How would you describe the overall design philosophy of Stella James, both aesthetically and emotionally?
MB: Aesthetically, the design is clean, timeless, and quietly bold. We focus on proportion, balance, and purity of form. Emotionally, every piece is meant to tell a story. It’s about connection—celebrating love, memory, and identity in a way that feels effortless and lasting.
Your pieces are meant to feel both elevated and wearable. How do you strike that balance between everyday jewelry and heirloom-quality design?
MB: It comes down to intention in both design and craftsmanship. We use high-quality materials 18k gold and traditional techniques, but the designs themselves are versatile and understated. The goal is to create pieces you never want to take off, something you can wear daily, but that still carries the weight and longevity of an heirloom.
Can you walk us through the craftsmanship and materials that go into creating your letter-shaped diamonds?
MB: Each piece begins with thoughtful design and precise stone selection. The letter forms are carefully engineered to maintain both beauty and structural integrity. We work with high-quality lab grown diamonds and 18k gold, ensuring every detail from setting to finish is executed right. It’s a meticulous process, because the simplicity of the design leaves no room for imperfection.
Do you have any favorite styling tips for wearing personalized jewelry, whether layering pieces or making them part of a daily look?
MB: I love mixing something deeply personal with something more classic. A letter piece can stand beautifully on its own, but it also layers effortlessly with other necklaces or rings. The key is to keep it natural. These pieces are meant to feel like part of you, not overly styled.
Do you have a favorite piece you’ve created?
MB: The letter pieces will always be the most special to me because they’re where everything began. They carry the original intention of the brand: love, identity, and connection. Each one feels personal, no matter who it’s made for.
What has the response been like since launching Stella James, and have any moments stood out along the way?
MB: The response has been incredibly meaningful. What stands out most is hearing the stories behind why someone chooses a piece whether it’s to celebrate a child, a relationship, or a memory. Those moments remind me why I started this in the first place.
How do your ties to New York and the Hamptons influence your style or the brand’s identity?
MB: New York brings a sense of strength, structure, and sophistication to the design—clean lines, confidence, and edge. The Hamptons add softness and ease—light, effortlessness, and a more relaxed elegance. The brand sits somewhere between the two: refined but never overdone. Also, my kids’ favorite home is forever the Hamptons home!
Where can customers currently shop Stella James, and are there any upcoming launches or expansions you’re excited about?
MB: Stella James is currently available online, where we can share the full story and experience of the brand. We’re also working on expanding into select retail spaces and introducing new pieces that build on our core collections.
Looking ahead, how do you see the brand evolving, and what’s next for you creatively?
MB: The future is about deepening the emotional connection while continuing to refine the design language. We’ll expand the collection thoughtfully, always staying true to the core idea of meaningful, timeless jewelry. Creatively, I’m excited to explore new forms of personalization and storytelling while keeping the essence of Stella James exactly as it began: personal, intentional, and enduring.
