Slurp the evening away with the Shelter Island Historical Society during the Third Annual Oyster Event on Saturday, October 15th at the Society’s Havens Barn.

Along with oysters on the half-shell, provided and shucked by Alice’s Fish Market of Greenport, guests can nosh on Oysters Rockefeller that will be cooked on-the-spot, and when you need a break from oysters, head to the plentiful vegetable platter that was grown locally at the gardens of Sylvester Manor Educational Farm or try one of the other delightful hors d’oeuvres options. Local wine and beer will also be available.

“We expect 200 + people to the 3rd annual Oyster event and RSVP’s are strongly encouraged,” shared Nanette Breiner Lawrenson, Executive Director of the Shelter Island Historical Society. “Last year we served 1,400 oysters.”

Island Musicians, including Fast Frets and Slow Food (Tom Hashagen and Lisa Shaw), will provide the evening’s entertainment. Additionally, those who are looking to learn a little bit more about the oyster’s East End history, a Shelter Island Oyster Company memorabilia exhibit from the collections of the Historical Society and local resident, Robert E. Walden III, will be on display.

The Nature Conservancy and Mashomack Preserve will be on-site to teach attendees about oyster biology/ecology, while representatives from Cornell’s S.P.A.T. Program speak with guests about how to grow their own oysters.

And don’t forget to document the night with a silly shot in the photo-booth provided by Shelter Island Party Rental.

“It’s fun, its casual, has great food and music and exhibits,” added Breiner Lawrenson about the Society’s Third Annual Oyster Event.

Admission is $40 per person.

The Shelter Island Historical Society’s mission is to “preserve the Island’s heritage for future generations” by “interpreting Shelter Island’s past and on-going life through preservation of historical material from the first inhabitants to those who have made it a caring and unique community through the years.”

Havens Barn is located at 16 South Ferry Road in Shelter Island. For more information, call 631-749-0025 or visit www.shelterislandhistorical.org.

  • At 55 Long Lane, East Hampton, Share the Harvest Farm is more than just rows of vibrant vegetables and rich soil, but a deeply rooted reflection of compassion and the strength of community. Founded in 2010 by John Malafronte, Ira Bezoza and Peter Garnham, this nonprofit farm was built on a simple but powerful idea, that everyone deserves access to wholesome, locally grown food.

For over 15 years, Share the Harvest has partnered with numerous other non-profit organizations to serve members of their community who may be dealing with food insecurity. In a region often associated with luxury and wealth, the farm sheds light on a quieter truth in which many local residents struggle to put healthy food on the table. At its core, Share the Harvest Farm is a place of purpose where every tomato, carrot, and pepper represents the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors.

Meredith Arm, the Executive Director, and Matthew Quirk, the Farm Director, shared more about the farm’s mission, the challenges they face, and the deep sense of purpose that drives their work each day.
