Sara Nightingale Gallery in Water Mill will welcome works by internationally-acclaimed artist Jim Gingerich during Out West – a two-day exhibit that was curated by Graham Leader.
Gingerich is highly regarded for his vibrant, evocative landscapes of the South Fork’s fields and beaches. This past year, Gingrich enjoyed a sabbatical in the high desert of Utah’s southwest Smithsonian Butte and Zion National Park, which has inspired his work thereafter and will be seen in Out West.

“My vision expanded in the vast space and the rusty red volcanized landscape excited me. I welcomed the opportunity for verticality in my work,” remarked Gingerich.
While on sabbatical out West, the artist painted every single day. He became an avid rider, bonding with a white fox trotter, Lucy, through the foothills of Zion. His adventures with Lucy were documented on Facebook and Instagram and enjoyed by friends and followers. His enjoyable experiences with Lucy ended when a terrifying tragedy occurred. On April 12th, Gingerich and Lucy were involved in a serious riding accident when the horse lost her balance and fell on Gingerich, crushing his pelvis.
Gingerich has since undergone two major surgeries and has returned to the comforts of his home in the Hamptons. He looks forward to his recovery after rehabilitation and therapy.
Guests of the exhibit are asked to make a suggested donation of $20 to help offset Jim’s medical expenses. Prints of Gingrich’s Lucy will also be on sale during the exhibit’s open hours.
Gingerich’s passion for painting can be summed up by one of his favorite Matisse quotes: “When they asked Matisse if he believed in God, he replied ‘Only when I’m working.'”
Out West can be viewed on Saturday, October 1st from 5 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, October 2nd from 12 to 5 p.m. All are invited to attend the Opening Benefit Reception on October 1st from 5 to 9 p.m. to enjoy paintings, wine, and hors d’oeuvres.
