On Saturday, July 30th, the Shelter Island Cricket Club (SICC) will present its 5th annual Shelter Island Charity Cricket Club event to raise money for the Shelter Island Ambulance Corps.
Last year, over 300 people supported the players and match, which raised over $15,000 and helped increase the total amount raised for the local Ambulance Corps to over $65,000. The winning team was The Rest of the World and the Shelter Island team came in second for the second year in a row. They are now tied 2 to 2.
This event was created because the Shelter Island Ambulance Corps was transferred from the Red Cross to the Town on January 1, 2012. The cost to run the service is estimated at about $100,000 a year. It is staffed by nearly 30 unpaid volunteers who service the needs of the 2,400 permanent residents and roughly 10,000 residents during the summer months of Shelter Island.

David Shillingford and Gareth Jones, Cricket Match organizers, explained how the Cricket Match came to fruition: “Something that started as a bet around the barbecue one night has morphed into a great annual event thanks to the support of the Shelter Island community. One of the greatest things about this event it that it allows visitors and part-time residents to give back to a community that brings all of us and our families so much joy. We would particularly like to acknowledge the Shelter Island Boat Yard for providing such a perfect venue, SALT for organizing the food and drink and Shelter Island Party Rental that generously donates the tents that protect either from the sun or, being cricket, the rain.”
This year’s match will be held at the large field next to the Island Boat Yard. The game will begin at 9 a.m. and a kid’s cricket game will take place during the lunch break from 12 to 1 p.m. The match will culminate at 4 p.m. Food, drink and SICC merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the day, and while there is no admission fee, donations are encouraged.
