The Old Whaler’s Church is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year, and on Saturday, July 2nd at 4 p.m., Marlene Markard, owner of Markard Music, and Ellen Johansen will perform a piano duet concert in honor of the momentous occasion.
“Our concert is one of several events marking the 250th anniversary celebration of The Old Whalers Church, which is iconic not only for its striking architecture and missing steeple (which was blown off in the Hurricane of 1938), but for its important role in Sag Harbor’s rich history as a gathering place and a place to find spiritual guidance and comfort,” said Markard. “The Old Whalers Church’s growth and membership continue to mirror Sag Harbor’s diverse and robust community and we’re proud to be a part of the celebration.”
Attendees of this joyous happening should expect to hear the duet play Faure, Ravel, Pulenc, Schubert, and a touch of Gilbert.
“Audiences of all ages will be excited to hear us play Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor, which is considered a masterpiece of piano four-hand music,” promised Markard. “It’s a meaty, evocative piece that was written in the last year of Schubert’s short life. We will also perform Poulenc’s Sonate, Faure’s Dolly Suite, and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. We also plan to give our audience a preview of the Fall program we’re preparing, which will feature exclusively American composers.”
Tickets to the piano duet concert are $20 for adults and free for students under 21-years-old. If you are interested in reserving a seat for the event, you are advised to email Markard in advance at [email protected].
