“The theme references material used in creation of the work of art,” shared Curator Arlene Bujese about Southampton Cultural Center’s new exhibition, Material Matters. “The material can be the catalyst or the necessary medium to fulfill a particular goal toward making the work.”

Material Matters will debut at Southampton Cultural Center on Tuesday, October 6th and be on view through Tuesday, November 17th. The show will feature pieces by Monica Banks, Patricia Feiwel, David Geiser, Alice Hope, Carol Hunt, Setha Low, Christa Maiwald, Barry Mccallion, Jeff Muhs, Gregory Thorpe, Pamela Topham, and Sarah Jaffe Turnbull.
“Each aesthetic statement relies to a major degree on the material components used in its formation,” noted Bujese. Artists created works using a broad range of materials like wire, beads, found objects, tree bark, metal can tabs, wool, silk, clay, paper, polyurethane, thread, canvas, and metal. “Motifs move from hanging wire sculpture, translucent abstract forms suspended from the ceiling, metal construction, abstract assemblage, collage, clay related to figuration, and in another instance, to abstract nature forms,” explained Bujese.
An opening reception for Material Matters will take place on Saturday, October 10th from 4 to 6 p.m.
