A day after the National League takes on the American League during the 2015 MLB All-Star Game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, you can watch the rising stars of a local league vie for glory during the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League’s All-Star Game.

On Wednesday, July 15th at 7:15 p.m., the top players and pitchers from the East End summer league are taking the field at Baseball Heaven for a battle of the North side verses the South side. Players comprised of teams from Shelter Island, the North Fork and Riverhead (North side) will battle against players from Westhampton, Southampton, Sag Harbor and Montauk (South side).
Currently, the Shelter Island Bucks (22-12) are in first place of the league, but they’re closed followed by the Westhampton Aviators (21-13), who are just one game behind.
Prior to the All-Star Game, Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League will hold its inaugural Home Run Derby at 3 p.m. Attendees can watch, as eight heavy hitters battle it out for bragging rights during the three-round derby. Participants include Montauk Mustangs’ Billy McLean (Stony Brook), North Fork Ospreys’ Peter Papcun (Monmouth), Riverhead Tomcats’ Hunter Dolshun (UMBC), Sag Harbor Whalers’ Scott Hagan (Mercy), Shelter Island Bucks’ Dominic Brugnoni (Florida Southern), Southampton Breakers’ Rob Moore (St. Peter’s), Westhampton Avlators’ Colin Brockhouse (Ball State), and North Fork’s Ryan Mahoney (Fordham), who was selected as the Derby fan vote, after earning 1,322 votes. Could one of the hometown heroes like Mahoney or McLean pull a Todd Frazier and whip the Long Island crowd into a frenzy like the slugger did for Cincinnati Reds fans at Monday night’s Home Run Derby? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
Each year, HCBL scouts for a group of gifted and ambitious athletes from over 80 universities, including Stanford, Vanderbilt, UConn, St. John’s, Southern Miss, Duke, Maryland, Texas A&M, Long Beach State, Minnesota and more to join them during the summer league. Several Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League alum are currently playing in the Minor League system and ’09 alum Nick Ahmed was the 2015 Opening Day shortstop for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
