Bay Street Theater & the Sag Harbor Center of the Arts’ Literature Live! is shining a spotlight on “To Kill a Mockingbird” this November. Joe Minutillo will direct the production, which is made possible by a cast of local actors from Sag Harbor, Hampton Bays, and Calverton.
“Since the start of this program six years ago, we’ve brought nearly 10,000 students from 51 schools across Long Island,” noted Tracy Mitchell, Executive Director at Bay Street Theater. “In working to ensure that theater remains accessible, this year we offered a Free Student Ticket Initiative. And we’ve seen a large jump in the number of students attending because of it.”
The show is based entirely on Harper Lee’s bestselling 1960s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and was adapted for stage by Christopher Sergel. The book, which won a Pulitzer Prize, follows the lives of Jem and Scout Finch and their father’s defense of Tom Robinson, a black man suspected of a crime he didn’t commit. Set in Alabama during the Great Depression, the story relates to themes of justice and racism, and continues to be read today by students across the country.

This year, Bay Street Theater’s Free Student Initiative will give schools and students the opportunity to further understand the subject matter by seeing it come to life on the stage in a 90 minute production.
Performances will be held at Bay Street Theater from Wednesday, November 5, 2014 through Saturday, November 29, 2014, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and matinees on Sunday, November 15th, Sunday, November 22nd, and Sunday, November 29th at 2 p.m. Weekday performances are reserved for schools.
