This year, in addition to their annual Passion for Compassion Hamptons benefit, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is hosting a weekend full of entertaining and informative activities.
On Friday, August 8, 2014, PCRM is holding a book signing with leading nutrition researcher and PCRM President Neal Barnard, M.D., at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen boutique (4 Bay Street, Sag Harbor) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the evening, Dr. Barnard will discuss the importance of power foods for wellness and will be joined by local farmers. Attendees can sip on refreshments from The Juice Press.
On Saturday, August 9, Dr. Barnard will lead “Shop the Nutrition Rainbow” with Sag Harbor Mayor Brian Gilbride and Jennifer Taylor, the executive director of the Wellness Foundation. The event features a tour of the Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market (Intersection of Bay Street and Burke Street, Sag Harbor), during which, the experts will discuss the impressive health benefits gained from eating a diet full of seasonal and local fresh fruits and vegetables. The tour will take place from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
“Our educational stroll through the Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market will help market-goers understand the importance of choosing vibrantly hued, seasonal fruits and vegetables—loaded with immune-boosting nutrients and disease-fighting fiber,” noted Dr. Barnard. “We’ll visit local vendors like Good Water Farms, Open Minded Organics, and Quail Hill, whose produce can help keep the Hamptons healthy.”
The weekend will culminate on Saturday evening with the annual Passion for Compassion Hamptons benefit from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. John Bradham, Dorothy Frankel and Michael Schwarz will co-host the soiree, which will be held at Bradham’s Amagansett home. The fundraiser will feature gourmet, plant-based hors d’oeuvres from Suite ThreeOhSix, desserts by Vegan Treats, specialty cocktails and music by DJ Stretch Armstrong and Paul Gene. Attendees can support PCRM by placing a bid on the silent auction, which will include a one-week stay at the Crane Resort in Barbados, a gift card to Provisions Natural Food Market and Organic Cafe in Sag Harbor and much more.
All proceeds from the weekend will support the work of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The nonprofit health organization promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research, and encourages higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research.
