Embrace your inner architect and come on down to the Clamshell Foundation’s 23rd Annual Sandcastle Contest at Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett. The contest is being held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those who wish to enter the contest will be charged an entry fee of $10 for each entry. Individual or group entries of all levels are welcomed. All proceeds from this event will go directly to The Clamshell Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to keep the beaches of the Hamptons in great condition for everyone to enjoy.
The five categories of the event include Sand Fleas for children age eight and under with the supervision of an adult leader, Sand Hoppers for those aged nine to 15, Sand Tribes for families who plan to compete together, Sand Shapers for adults and Sand Pros for sand castle professionals. Contestants are not allowed to build castles in front of the lifeguard stands, are not permitted to go into the dunes for any reason and cannot use power tools or equipment of any kind. There is a maximum of six members per group allowed. You can use objects and tools to aid in building, but only natural materials can be on the finished sculpture itself. Sandcastles must be built above the high tide line. Holes must be filled in before you leave and bird-nesting areas cannot be disturbed during construction.
