Uniting Against Lung Cancer will kick off the summer season in Southampton with its eighth annual, “Kites for a Cure” event at Coopers Beach on Saturday, May 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. Rain or shine, the family kite fly is expected to bring more than 1,000 participants and friends to the beach to benefit lung cancer research and raise awareness for the nation’s number one cancer killer.
“Since 2006, ‘Kites for a Cure’ has become the official start of summer for many people in and around our community,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “This joyous event brings families and friends to our beautiful Coopers Beach to raise awareness and honor those who have lost their lives to lung cancer.”
The Kite Fly holds a special place in Mayor Epley’s heart. He will serve as the Honorary Commodore of the event in memory of his father, who lost his battle with lung cancer nine years ago. In addition to the Mayor, other local officials and business leaders from the community will also be attending the event.
“Over the years, the ‘Kites for a Cure’ event in Southampton has helped provide substantial funds for UALC’s innovative research grant program,” said UALC President, Mary Ann Tighe. “With an underwriting sponsorship from Rechler Equity Partners and The Hampton Business District at Gabreski Airport, we are able to make important strides in research which can ultimately be used to find a cure for this deadly disease.”
For a donation of $30, guests receive a kite to decorate on-site with pictures, names, or their own special message. Chocolate chip cookies from Tate’s Bakeshop in Southampton and beverages provided by Hint will be available throughout the afternoon. A “Family of Flyers” can participate for $300.
