Long Island Animal Shelters Hold Successful World Spay Day Campaign

East End animal shelters teamed up on World Spay Day USA to address the increasing feral cat population on Long Island. Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) and North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Southold Shelter held a mass trapping where they used the Trap/Neuter/Release program.

Throughout the day, volunteers managed to bring over 30 cats to the SASF Mobile Clinic, where they were spayed/neutered by shelter staff, ear tipped and then released back to their colonies. The TNR program is an essential and humane way to help reduce the population of stray cats and kittens who often end up crowding shelters and neighborhoods. In a 7 year lifespan, a mother cat and her brood can have over 400,000 kittens.

SASF’s Mobile Clinic was funded by the ASPCA. It travels to communities throughout the East End to grant low cost services to those who might otherwise not have their pets spayed or neutered.
