Southampton Hospital Joins “Rethink Your Drink @ Work” Movement

“Research shows that sugary drinks are the single biggest contributor to the nation’s obesity epidemic and a recent study demonstrates that just one can a day can increase the risk of diabetes by 20 percent,” noted Gemma Saylor, Registered Dietician and “Rethink Your Drink @ Work” Program Director.

Southampton Hospital is taking a significant step to address obesity-related health issues by joining “Rethink Your Drink @ Work,” a program funded by the New York State Department of Health – Healthy Heart Program. Saylor administers the free wellness program that is available to businesses throughout Suffolk County.

“The goal of our program is to educate employees on how these beverages can hurt us, and to help worksites throughout Suffolk County make the healthy choice the easy choice,” said Saylor.

Studies show that Americans consume about 100 lbs. of sweeteners per person annually. The core mission of “Rethink Your Drink @ Work” is to have people replace soda and other sugary drinks with healthy beverages like water, seltzer water, low-fat or non-fat milk, and unsweetened teas or coffees.

As part of their commitment to the movement, Southampton Hospital is introducing healthier beverages in vending machines as well as at their Meeting House Café on the Hospital’s lower level. The improved options will benefit both staff and visitors. Waist friendly choices will include flavored seltzers, unsweetened teas, 100 percent juices, and low-calorie drinks.
