This August, The Kent Animal Shelter will spay and neuter Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs for Long Island residents for a reduced, $20 rate, which also includes a free doggie nail trim, during PetSmart Charities’ annual, “Primp Your Pit,” campaign.
American Pit Bull Terriers are one of the most common dogs in the United States. However, an estimated seventy percent of all dogs housed and euthanized in animal shelters, are also Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs.
Unfortunately, myths and confusions surrounding the breed lead to to high shelter intake and low adoption rates of Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs of all ages.
In order to reduce the numbers of Pit Bull Terriers in shelters and prevent euthanasia, PetSmart Charities is providing more than $388,000 in grant funding to 57 animal welfare organizations across the country, so that they can sterilize 6,796 Pit Bull Terrier-type dogs during the August campaign.
“Spaying or neutering your dog is the most effective way to prevent unwanted litters from being born that may ultimately end up in our local animal shelter,” said Pamela Green, Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter.
The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends spaying and neutering puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old. Research shows that the procedure may improve the behavior as well as the health of the pet. Getting this procedure done may also reduce the risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections later in life.
Please Note: Pit Bull parents who wish to take advantage of this special offer must mention the “Primp Your Pit” promotion when they schedule their appointments. The promotion is based on availability, and the spaces are limited.
