East End runners get ready to race this weekend as the Sag Harbor Lions Club, Blessings in a Backpack and Backpacks For Fellow Students are hosting Hamptons 5K’s benefiting local causes.
The Sag Harbor Lions Club is holding Andy’s Run 5K on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Named in honor of Andy Neidneg, long time runner and resident of Sag Harbor, the race takes a scenic route beginning at the intersection of West Water Street, Long Island Avenue and Garden Street and heads east. Run along Main Street heading south passing many of Sag Harbor’s businesses, historic homes, museums and the library. The course turns right onto Glover Street down towards Redwood, then bends right onto West Water Street toward Sag Harbor’s cove. Runners will cross the finish line at the registration tents on West Water Street.

On Sunday, October 5, 2014, join Blessings in a Backpack and Backpacks For Fellow Students for the Race for a Reason 5K at Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westampton Beach. Check-in and race registration is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is $25 and registration is $30 on the day of.
Both organizations support children in need within the community. Blessings in a Backpack provides students with nutritional food to take home every weekend during the school year. Students enrolled in the program have shown marked improvement in attendance, test scores, behavior and health. Backpacks For Fellow Students provides elementary school children with their required school supplies to the start of the school year. The mission is to create a level playing field and lifelong learners who give back to the community.
