Southampton Hospital Educates East End Residents About Tick-Borne Diseases During Public Seminar

On September 20, 2014, Southampton Hospital’s Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center hosted its second public seminar at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. Qualified presenters and experts discussed diagnostic testing, treatment, tick-induced meat allergies and prevention of tick-borne diseases.

Awareness against Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness on Long Island has taken center stage recently as local politicians have joined the fight. Senator Ken LaValle secured $150,000 in state funding to be utilized for fighting Lyme and tick-borne diseases on the East End. “The extent and severity of the Lyme disease cases on the East End has escalated to the point of a public health crisis,” Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. noted. “Senator LaValle and I have been working closely with our municipalities to find the most appropriate management strategies. This funding will allow North Haven and Shelter Island to expand highly successful four-poster programs.”
