Southampton Hospital’s Ed & Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute joined forces with Southampton Intermediate School Physical Education Teacher Jayne Katz to inform students about easy ways to get active and live a healthy lifestyle. The effort was part of Southampton Hospital’s American Heart Month outreach.
Katz and Southampton Hospital experts assisted students as they created a 5-week course featuring a variety of exercise activities like Boot Camp, Pilates, Stretch & Tone, Interval Training, and Zumba. Also in February, Wellness Institute Certified Fitness Instructors, Maureen Lerch and Cristal Schultheis, visited a sixth grade class to showcase a heart-pumping, Tabata-style interval workout to remind students that heart health begins early, and you’re never too young to adapt healthy habits. Sticking to a nutritious meal plan and staying physically active are two effective ways to help prevent heart disease.
In honor of American Heart Month, new patients of the Southampton Hospital Cardiac Rehab Gym can visit the fitness center for free on Fridays during February. To make an appointment, call 631-726-8620.
Southampton Hospital is also hosting an Open House for American Heart Month on February 23rd from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The free event will feature heart health screenings, nutrition advice, exercise demonstration, stress management, and more.
