For the second year in a row, Concerned Citizens of Montauk (CCOM) is teaming up with the Surfrider Foundation’s nationwide Blue Water Task Force water quality testing program to test bodies of water in Montauk and Amagansett for the bacteria enterococcus. Each week, highly trained volunteers set out to collect and test water samples from Ditch Plains, Lake Montauk and Fort Pond in Montauk and Fresh Pond in Amagansett. The experts then post the test results online on Surfrider’s Blue Water Task Force portal (www.surfrider.org).
“Protecting our natural resources is essential to Montauk’s ecology and economy,” noted Concerned Citizens of Montauk.

CCOM and Surfrider Foundation believe that sharing the water quality results will increase public and governmental awareness of environmental conditions and in turn improve water quality. The testing sites are spread across the ocean beach at Ditch Plains and South Lake by the former public bathing beach in Lake Montauk. This year, the testing expanded to include Fresh Pond in Amagansett and the organizations hope to include more sites west of Napeague in the near future.
