Did you know that black cats are 50 percent less likely to be adopted than other cats? The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is trying to change that sad statistic with Adopt a Black Cat Month, its newest campaign, which will offer half off adoption fees for black cats and kittens throughout the month of August.
Dotti Donaldson and Fred Vanderwerven are strong supporters of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. They adopted their 6-year-old cat, Jake, from the Shelter when he was just a kitten. And over the years, they have fostered a few all black, and black and white “tuxedo” cats, that were always wonderful companions to their family.
This summer, they fostered three litters of kittens for the Shelter, and they watched as the kittens socialized and become affectionate. “Two (Cooper and Shelby) of these nine kittens adopted us! They bring us such joy,” shared Dotti and Fred. “And during our visits to the shelter, it was clear that so many black (and black and white “tuxedo” cats) are still waiting for homes. We’ve learned that, in many cultures, black cats are said to bring good luck and prosperity to their owners. But mainly, love comes in many colors. That’s why we want to help these elegant cats and kittens find their forever homes.”
The Shelter is extremely grateful for the duo’s backing. “Thank-you to our sponsors Dotti Donaldson and Fred Vanderwerven for their generous donations,” expressed Kate McEntee of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. “With their support we are able to offer this adoption promotion. Thanks for supporting our shelter and helping black cats find forever homes!”
The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing for the welfare of homeless pets in our community and, in turn, placing them in permanent caring homes. SASF’s mission is to provide care for the animals at the Shelter and to reduce the number of homeless pets. The Shelter’s goal is to promote and nourish the bond between people and animals through adoption, education and community outreach.
So stop by the Shelter this summer and support SASF by giving an animal a loving home that they deserve.
