Southampton Arts Center will host a trio of iconic spooky films to accompany their Spooktacular Haunted House this October. All are encouraged to meander (or speed walk – depending on your fright tolerance) through the ghostly locale and then end your night in the theater. Beetlejuice, Poltergeist, and Rocky Horror Picture Show are the films included in this year’s Halloween-themed lineup.

“We simply felt it was not enough to offer the delightfully quirky Chas Addams: Family and Friends exhibition as well as the return of the terrifying haunted house, but to truly make this spooky season complete with the addition of these definitive films,” shared Director of Programs, Amy Kirwin. “We envision the Southampton Arts Center as your one-stop-shop for terror this month!”
Beetlejuice (1988) will screen on Friday, October 21st at 8 p.m. The film has a running time of 92 minutes and is rated PG-13. The Tim Burton directed film follows Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin), who find themselves stuck haunting their country abode after they die in a car accident. The insufferable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) purchase the home, and the Maitlands efforts to scare them away is comically unsuccessful, but it does catch the attention of Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rowdy spirit whose “assistance” swiftly becomes hazardous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia.

Poltergeist (1982), a PG film directed by Tobe Hooper, will be shown on Friday, October 28th at 8 p.m. After a typical California family settles into their new home, ghosts commune with them via the television set, and bizarre and eerie occurrences ensue. While the spirits are initially pleasant and playful, things take a turn for the worse when the youngest child, Carol Ann, disappears. Poltergeist stars Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Dominique Dunne, Heather O’Rourke, and Zelda Rubinstein.

The Center’s first annual screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) will take place on Saturday, October 29th at 10 p.m. Fun props will be available for purchase at this interactive R-rated feature. Jim Sharman directed this well-known, 100 minute film. Lovebirds Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) become stranded during a storm when their car gets a flat tire. Upon discovering the spooky mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist, they decide to enter and find a houseful of mischievous characters, including a rocking biker (Meat Loaf) and unusual butler (Richard O’Brien). Intricate dance numbers and rock songs lead up to the debut of Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s newest project: an Adonis-like man named “Rocky.”
The Spooktacular Haunted House, produced by Oscar Gonzalez, offers seven rooms of spine-chilling horror. Open to ages 8 and older, it’s the perfect unnerving family and friend gathering during this Halloween season. The lights will be on for the first hour of the evening. The Spooktacular Haunted House will be open Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd from 5 to 10 p.m., Sunday, October 23rd from 3 to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 27th, Friday, October 28th and Saturday, October 29 from 5 to 10 p.m., Sunday, October 30th from 4 to 9 p.m. and Monday, October 31st from 4 to 7 p.m.
Additionally, Southampton Arts Center’s Chas Addams: Family and Friends exhibit will be on view through Monday, October 31st.
Admission ranges from $5 to $8 for the Halloween-themed happenings.
