Each year, at the beginning of the holiday season, the Montauk Fire Department places a giant red box by the gazebo on The Green in downtown Montauk with the hopes of spreading holiday cheer to families in need. Throughout the end of November and most of December, community members and visitors filled the beloved, cheerful donation box with new toys and those donations were given to local families who otherwise might not have been able to afford to put presents under the tree.
Joseph P. Lenahan, Chief of the Montauk Fire Department, was extremely grateful for the community’s kindness. “I would like to take a moment to thank the Montauk Community once again for its incredible generosity,” shared Chief Lenahan. “Every year since 2009, on the day after Thanksgiving, the Montauk Fire Department has placed its famous Red Toy Box on The Green in downtown Montauk, to collect new toys for the less fortunate children in our Community.”
This year’s toy drive was the most successful to date. “I am more than pleased to announce that 2016 has been a record year for this effort,” shared Chief Lenahan. “We collected way over 100 gifts to share with those who might otherwise have none.”
“Thank you so much for making this happen,” he added.
