Westhampton Free Library, who is celebrating 120 years of service to the community, has partnered with Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) for a Furry Friends Drive. From Tuesday, January 3rd through Tuesday, January 31st, the Westhampton Free Library is collecting vital shelter items, like food, treats, Kongs, peanut butter, blankets, towels, comforters, and other items, that will be donated to the Shelter.
“We have partnered with the Southampton Animal Shelter in collecting items to help the animals feel more comfortable while they are waiting for their forever homes,” explained Marie Yervasi, Children’s Librarian/Programmer at Westhampton Free Library. “We will be collecting for the whole month of January. Please bring in items including treats, blankets, peanut butter and Kongs for these animals.”

The Southampton Animal Shelter was operated as a municipal shelter by the Town of Southampton, but in 2010, the Town was forced to eliminate the shelter due to budget cuts. A devoted group of local animal lovers joined forces and saved the shelter. They established the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, whose mission is “to provide for the welfare of the ever growing number of homeless animals, and, in turn, to place them in permanent caring homes.”
“We appreciate the support of the Westhampton Library for organizing this drive for these much needed supplies,” expressed Jerry Rosenthal, SASF Executive Director. “During the winter months people often forget that our animals are here being cared for by our staff and volunteers. As the community shelter and resource for responsible pet ownership we are grateful for the partnership.”

The animals at SASF are particularly fond of one of the items that is being collected. “Our dogs love peanut butter,” shared Kate McEntee, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Director of Public Relations and Marketing. “Every night our dogs get a special treat, a kong that is stuffed with peanut butter, wet food and dry food for their bed time snack.”
The Furry Friends Drive will help ensure the shelter residents are treated to their nightly indulgence. “As you can image we go through a lot of peanut butter, treats and kongs,” McEntee added. “It is so helpful to receive donated pet supplies, treats and toys from our friends. Thank you for your support Westhampton Library!”
