Uber and Mothers Against Drunk Driving have joined forces to help prevent Long Islanders from driving drunk on Thanksgiving eve.
For those that plan on catching up with friends you haven’t seen in a while while you’re home for Thanksgiving and will be going out on Wednesday, November 22, let Uber be your designated driver for the evening, and believe it or not, the ride sharing app is offering complimentary transportation throughout the night.
From 9 p.m. on Wednesday to 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving, you can unlock two free rides up to $15 per way by entering the promo code “SAFERIDELI” in your Uber app. The rides must begin and end on Long Island.
Suffolk and Nassau Counties have some of the highest rates of alcohol-related accidents in New York, according to the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research, which notes in 2015, Suffolk County had 866 alcohol-related crashes and Nassau County had 573.
“With more transportation options in Suffolk County than ever before, there is no excuse to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking,” Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone noted in press release from MADD and Uber. “I support efforts such as these that incentivize residents to stay off the road, and this Thanksgiving Eve, I urge everyone to enjoy themselves safely, responsibly, and plan ahead.”
