Scrabble teams from several East End schools have once again earned the prestigious honor of competing at the National School Scrabble Championship, and to commemorate the fête, they’re inviting you to join them at the Hampton Bays Middle School Cafeteria for the 8th Annual Scrabble “FUN”Raiser tournament on Sunday, March 4.
But, Scrabble fanatics shouldn’t expect the typical experience.
“Join us for an afternoon of classic word game fun with a twist–you’ll be able to buy a vowel, sneak a peek at a word list or get an expert tip while helping teams from Hampton Bays, Westhampton Beach and East Quogue Schools on their way to the North American School Scrabble Championship,” said Kathy Hummel, who coaches the students.
Challengers, who will compete alongside a friend – and teams can be two students, two adults or a combo – will play a total of three games. If you don’t come with a partner, you’ll be placed on a team.
Make sure to pack some extra moola because when you’ve reached the point where you can’t possibly think of a word to throw down, you’ll be able to buy a competitive advantage. Also, those who plan ahead and pre-register will receive special word lists and playing tips. So, if you’re not the best speller, don’t let that deter you from supporting this great cause.
The 2018 North American School Scrabble Championship (NASSC) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA will take place on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29, and proceeds from this event will support participants’ trip.
The East End will be represented by 9th grader Holly Anderson, 8th grader RaSaan Ayala, 7th graders Amarai Ayala, Zach Himelfarb and Christian Pensa, 6th graders Faith Bell, John Hilbert, Matthew Papajohn and Taylor Tureski and 5th graders Faith Bell and Lily Tureski. This marks Anderson’s fourth trip to the NASSC and the second for RaSaan Ayala, Papajohn and Pensa.
The suggested admission donation is $15 per person/$30 per team in advance and $20 per person/$40 per team at the door – which includes lunch. The Scrabble “FUN”Raiser tournament will be held from 12 to 4:30 p.m.
The Hampton Bays Middle School Cafeteria is located at 70 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays. For more information, or to pre-register, contact Kathy Hummel at 631-872-8434 or [email protected]
