On Saturday, June 16, former Olympian, four time NYC Marathon winner and four time Boston Marathon winner, Bill Rodgers, Olympic Gold Medal winner and first-ever women’s Olympic marathon champion, Joan Benoit Samuelson were joined by over 1,500 runners and walkers during the 39th Annual Shelter Island 10K/5K Run/Walk.
Top honors for the 10K went to Linus Kiplagat who completed the USA track and field certified course in 29:45.03, a 4:47 mile pace, and the top female finisher was Birtukan Fente Alemu who completed the race in 33:40.36. Second place went to Issac Mukundi who ran the race in 30:21.07 and Shewarge Alene Amare who finished in 4:26.29, while Temesgen Habtemariam Bekele (30:59.39) and Margaret Wamahiga (34:39.33) earned third place.
The 10K wheelchair race was won by Peter Hawkins who completed the race in 36:11.79.
For the 5K, Nicholas Minikel (18:34.70) and Rose Hayes (20:55.28) earned the top spot, while Patrick O’Halloran (18:37.42) and Cornelia Carragher (21:00.64) finished second, and the third spot went to Griffin Schwartz (19:19.32) and Nancy Labiner (22:22.23).
Proceeds from the run/walk support the Shelter Island 10K Community Fund, East End Hospice, and the Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch.
