Columbus Day weekend in the Hamptons means it’s time to make your way to “The End” for Montauk’s Annual Fall Festival and Chowder Contest, sponsored by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce. The 37th iteration will take place on Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7.
The Festival, which is the Chamber’s major annual fundraiser, attracts hundreds of visitors and locals to downtown Montauk to enjoy a variety of entertaining seasonal activities.
One of the most highly anticipated happenings is the Clam Chowder Contest, which takes place on Saturday.
“People love and line up early for chowder selections from our local restaurants…it seems the clam soup signifies the essence of Montauk for visitors and the community,” explained Laraine Creegan, Chamber Executive Director.
Those interested in testing out the delicious chowders may purchase two mugs (two classic chowder varieties will be showcased), which will be available at the Chamber on the Friday before the Festival and on the day of the competition. The Contest will begin at 11 a.m. and tastings will be available until the chowder runs out. Notable food personalities will select the top honors – with awards going to the best New England and Manhattan chowders. The winners will be announced at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 6 and posted both on the Chamber’s Facebook page and website.
This year’s Fall Festival will also feature a 30-horse carousel, which attendees can ride at no cost, inflatable rides, face painting, pumpkin decorating, street painting, crab races, and more.
Joe Delia and The Thieves will headline on Saturday, while the 3B’s will provide the live music on Sunday.
On both days Oktoberfest style food will be available for purchase, as will Long Island wines and beer. The Montauk Farmers Market will also offer delicious bites from local vendors.
On Sunday, the Festival’s Chinese Auction will take place under the tent. The Festival will close out with another highly anticipated event, the Chamber’s annual Cash Catch drawing for up to $20,000. The drawing will take place at 4:30 pm.
For those take don’t reside in Montauk, Hampton Jitney will be offering free transportation from stops in Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Amagansett. Reservations are required though. To reserve a seat, contact the Jitney at 631-283-4600.
A portion of the proceeds from the Fall Festival will support local not-for-profits such as the Montauk Food Pantry, the July 4th and Fall Fireworks Fund, the Frank Cappozola Scholarship Fund and others.
The Fall Festival will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
