Sixty-Something: Facebook Reconnects Me

For me Facebook is like receiving daily copies of my high school and college yearbooks. I see new photos of friends I knew as a child almost everyday. I see their grandchildren in action, I see the classmates I actually haven’t spoken to for 30 years and their newly posted stuff daily. I see their trips, their desserts, their flower gardens, new cars, and other great photos.

Social media has connected us old sixty-something folks in a way to bring our lives back almost in a complete circle as we go back and forth with friends we knew when we were single digit years old, but living life caused us to lose track.

For the younger generations unfortunately Facebook brings out their insecurities that society has now thrust on the young. They are concerned about how Facebook posts may effect who they are going to become. They are concerned about what others may think perhaps way too much. That’s just my opinion.

Seeing the smiles and hearing the voices via video post gives us all a glimpse into the lives of the folks we played with at playgrounds, and yes thought about at those Pelham Association of Kids dances back in the 1960’s.

I love to post sunset photos from daily sails because so many times I am alone out there seeing these amazing sunsets over Gardiner’s Bay and feel a need to reach out and share them. I believe they are so powerful and beautiful perhaps other may enjoy a couple of seconds peek!

I stay away from politics and religion on social media but other believes it is their chance to make a difference by sharing their strong held views. Lately that has been intense.

I find twitter annoying because most of the times the posts are political and mean spirited or just crazy bias and emotional.

I have almost 4,000 Facebook friends but only 1,000 are folks I know well. Others are friends of friends, or musicians and folks in the communications and media business who I have friended out of respect for the industry.

I respect those who try to keep their contact circle smalls, but I am just not wired that way. I am thinking if you are reading this it might just be because it was on my Facebook page.
