Sixty-Something: Things I Am Going To Do In The Hamptons After The Coronavirus Pandemic

I have been quarantined in my home for weeks. I am watching and feeling another spring happen, mostly from my bedroom. However, I was just thinking what I am going to do in the Hamptons when this quarantine ends. Besides getting my sailboat back into the waters of Gardiner’s Bay and starting my 2020 sailing season, there are some major other things I really want to do.

One thing I need to do is get out and hear and support some live music in the Hamptons. I will be tipping the bands who made zero dollars during this whole ordeal. I am sure I will rise to my feet and dance with my wife, I have been missing live music and dancing.

I know I am going to truly enjoy my first post Coronavirus stroll up and down Main Street, Sag Harbor because I just really enjoy that walk down to the wharf. It’s historic in nature and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. In 2007 I was assigned to write a three-piece history of Sag Harbor to commemorate it’s 300th-year anniversary (1706-2006). Ever since that assignment I have had a special appreciation for Sag Harbor Village.

Perhaps next I am going to go fetch a lobster roll, perhaps at “LUNCH/Lobster Roll” in Amagansett/Napeague, for my annual visit there for a lobster roll and beer. Over time I may add additional visits for lobster rolls to the Dock House in Sag Harbor, Clam Bar in Napeague, Sundays in Hampton Bay, Marie Eiffel’s on Shelter Island, Claudio’s in Greenport, Beach Hut at Atlantic Beach in Amagansett and Orient by the Sea at Orient Point. It’s no secret I love good lobster rolls.

I definitely want to eventually have an early afternoon pizza outdoors on the Main Street porch/patio of World Pie in Bridgehampton and “people watch.” I love to “people watch” in the Hamptons.

I think I may also park my car at Atlantic Beach in Amagansett and then ride my bike to many of the beaches in East Hampton. I love that ride down Further Lane to Lily Pond Lane and then over to Georgica Pond. Very touristy but I love it!

I am pledging here and now to climb all those tiny stairs to the top of the Montauk Lighthouse and stick my face in the strong ocean breeze up there to celebrate the return of my freedom. It’s been a few years since I have done that.

I also cannot wait to ride the Shelter Island Ferries – both the South Ferry and North Ferry. I have always enjoyed those rides since I was a kid. Once on Shelter Island I will walk one of my favorite walks – that being Ram’s Island Drive, a must on a clear night for star gazing.

Every year I sail over to the shoreline of Orient Point State Park, but only every now and then do I drive there. Again, another sweet road of wildlife and scenic beauty. I love to stand on the beach and look at the view of Gardiner’s Island and all the sailboats in the bay.

Last, but not least, is a twofer. A Louse Point swim and a lunch on the porch of the Springs General Store. A brisk cool swim at Louse Point in East Harbor is always delightful before a Springs General Store hot turkey meatloaf sandwich on that special grain bread toasted with mayo and ketchup. Then a few of their in store made cookies!

In the end, it will just be the return of my freedom of movement and the loss of that horrid feeling of fear I will most enjoy. Happy days will return to the East End. I plan on enjoying them.
