J. Mackey Gallery is pleased to present “Like Water in the Hand.” a solo exhibition of works by Johanna Palmieri. In this poignant exhibition, she utilizes figurative realism and bold abstraction to explore memory, nostalgia, and the things that slip away in fluid oil paint. Drawing inspiration from vintage photographs and distant memories, Palmieri employs bright colors and distinct figures to capture bygone summers.
“Before everything had to be documented and shared, summers had a different quality: a table set for lunch, children running down a dune, friends lingering after a swim. A time when presence was enough.”
Johanna Palmieri has called Oaxaca, Mexico home for many years. Originally from New York, Palmieri received a BA from Indiana University and has participated in several artist residencies around the world. J. Mackey owner Justine McEnerney discovered her work in Marfa, Texas. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in Tunisia and Mexico, and in group exhibitions at the Institute of Material Interpretation (Marfa, TX), Olympia Gallery (New York, NY), and Wieden + Kennedy. She is quickly becoming one of our best-selling artists, with pieces in several private collections.
