The Hamptons is known for spectacular views and eclectic experiences, mixing both ideas and you get Navy Beach in Montauk. The beachfront restaurant is a staple for landlubbers and boaters alike who come for the burgers and stay for a few extra cocktails at the bar or a walk along the beach at sunset.

One afternoon in August I dropped by for lunch to enjoy the restful view of Fort Pond Bay and see what new delights were on the menu. Best known for the Navy Burger, a gastronomic creation piled high with Cabot cheddar and bacon-onion marmalade, the menu is a variety of small plates and raw bar options. Go off the beaten path and sample the Yunnan Ribs and thank me for the suggestion. Crispy with a chili and caramel sauce you’ll be trying to recreate the succulent recipe at home (I asked and the chef won’t give the details, sorry folks). There are salads and sides a plenty, including sautéed kale for those on that diet kick.
Skip the table and hang out at the bar and order mussels, shrimp and corn fritters, or perhaps the parm fries with plenty of garlic. These noshes were made for sharing with a couple of Painkillers, a dark rum and coconut libation, while telling big fish tales just down the road from Gosman’s Dock.
Open through September with jamming live music on the weekends, Navy Beach is located at 16 Navy Road, Montauk, www.navybeach.com.
