Southampton Arts Center is proud to present the much-anticipated second exhibition of its 10th-anniversary year, “A Moment in Time: Iconic Images by Harry Benson,” opening on Saturday, May 26. This exhibition is an exceptional presentation of award-winning Scottish photojournalist Harry Benson’s impressive collection of images. Benson is known for documenting notable civil rights figures, musicians, politicians, athletes, and celebrities, and his iconic work captures some of the most significant moments of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The exhibition, curated by Sally Martin Katz, showcases noteworthy Benson’s life and career. This display highlights more than just photography, it’s about the man behind the camera and his journey through life.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to curate an exhibition of a photographer whose work I have long admired and who is a legendary figure within the photography world. Benson’s work is notable for his ability to be at the right place at the right time and to create images that capture the ethos of their era. His photographs provide insight into the watershed events of his lifetime and into the characters of the people who have shaped our culture and our history,” says Sally Martin Katz.
Benson began his career as a photojournalist and conducted interviews with prisoners in Scotland. In 1964, he traveled to the United States with the Beatles, and from that moment on, his career took off. Benson was under contract with LIFE magazine for 30 years and has photographed for other major publications such as TIME, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, French Vogue, Quest, Paris Match, Forbes, Town & Country, Architectural Digest, People, and The London Sunday Times Magazine.
This exhibit is a rare opportunity to see Benson’s photographs from his 75-year career. The images will hopefully surprise, delight, and engage viewers, leading to animated discussions of memorable times past.
Additional special programs, including an Exhibition Opening Reception on Friday, May 26, and a film screening of ‘Harry Benson: Shoot First’ on Friday, July 7, both include book signings.
