As 2016 comes to a close, Matrix Style Link Celebrity Colorist George Papanikolas is sharing his predictions for the hottest hair color trends for 2017.
Jewel Tones:
“It’s a slightly more vibrant version of the pastel tones that were so popular for the past few years. Unlike the pastels, you don’t need to pre-lighten to a super pale blonde so it can be easier for those with darker hair to play with this trend,” he noted. “Jewel tones are more of a fashion shade. You don’t need to worry about them complementing your skin as they don’t happen in nature. With these colors, pick your favorite and which will most likely pair with your wardrobe. Lightening is required to a degree so it is much easier for those with lighter hair. Dark hair will need to consider the stress the processing puts on the hair.”
Tigers Eye:
“The color (a combination of highlights – in shades like honey, amber and soft brown – that are painted on using the balayage technique) is not only beautiful but it’s ever so subtle when it grows out so you don’t have to worry about harsh roots and high maintenance. The look has a universal appeal as it sits in the middle of the hair color spectrum,” Papanikolas shared. “It can be adjusted warmer or cooler to suit your skin tone. It’s also great for those who love low-maintenance color.”

Baby Blonde:

“Super pale blonde always gives the hair lots of pop and a youthful appearance,” he explained. “It’s best for those starting with dark blonde hair or lighter. Achieving this look on dark hair can look harsh and can compromise the integrity of the hair.”
Nude Hair:
“The nude hair color trend has an almost powdery, earthy, sandy tone that embodies both elegance and restraint,” Papanikolas said. “Nude hair is perfect for neutral or golden complexions. Cool skin tones should avoid this as it can look drab and wash them out. It’s also ideal when you have a lighter starting level. Dark hair will need to be pre-lightened first to achieve this tone.”
Chocolate Mauve:
“It’s a playful way for brunettes to mix up their typical caramel and honey colored highlights. It’s easy to do with a mauve gloss, and gradually fades out so you don’t have to worry about long term commitment,” Papanikolas shared. “This is a great way for brunettes to get a modern take on highlights without having to pre-lighten or totally process their hair.”
