1LT Joseph J. Theinert lost his life on June 4, 2010, while serving his country during Operation Enduring Freedom. His family started the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund, which awards scholarships to local high school students. The foundation is holding the Fourth Annual 1LT Joseph J. Theinert 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Saturday, November 30, at 1 p.m. in the Shelter Island School Gymnasium.
The Tournament has grown into an East End tradition, attracting participants from all over the North Fork and South Fork including Shelter Island, Greenport, Southold, Sag Harbor and the Ross School. Teachers, students, alumni and local businesses band together for the fun fundraising competition that remembers a local hero.
Registration is $150 for the double-elimination tournament. Each team must have a high school student as well as a female player. The top three teams are awarded trophies, and prizes will be given for the audience’s choice of best dressed player. Halftime will feature a kids competition and live auction with four courtside Brooklyn Nets tickets for a game in January.
The recipients of the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund’s five annual scholarships include the Shelter Island School, Mattituck-Cutchogue High School, and a student who has graduated from a Long Island high school and attends SUNY Albany. The foundation also underwrites programs and services that enhance the lives of United States Armed Forces service members, veterans, and their families.
A Veteran’s Gift Drive will be held during the tournament for residents of Suffolk County United Veterans facilities. Items including nonperishable food, toiletries, and special gifts can be donated.
The Shelter Island School is located at 33 North Ferry Road. For more information visit www.rememberourjoes.org.
