Every summer, Jean Shafiroff and Sequin host a cocktail and shopping soiree at the design studio’s Job’s Lane store to benefit the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF). Sequin owners, sisters Kim and Linda Renk, who started the company in 2000, were still in Europe. Making our way through socialites stocking up on statement jewelry, we asked Sequin’s Cheryl Dovenberg to map out this year’s trends.

“It’s all about the tassel,” she told Hamptons.com. “We just came back from Europe and they were everywhere, San Tropez, Ibiza.” Oversized talismans and semi precious stones are other components of “the look.”
Statement necklaces, a favorite Sequin staple, have evolved into a more organic look. “You won’t see as much casted pieces framing the stones as other elements that make it a little softer,” Dovenberg explained. Their use of different elements reminded us of a collage. She likened it to “multimedia.”
The Job’s Lane store is showing the signs of their Southampton success. It will stay open through the holidays this year, which means new shipments and styles. It also has more one-of-a-kind pieces, designed in their NY studio by Creative Director Tara Malkovich. “It’s not manufactured, it’s handcrafted,” Dovenberg stressed. “And all of our talismans are 22 karat gold dipped.”
You’ll also find more than jewelry. Shoppers can discover handmade handbags from Madagascar, Marisol hats and bags, the Carthusia line of candles and diffusers, made from local ingredients they discovered on the Isle of Capri.
Color Karma bangles— semi precious beaded bangles with little talismans — are a new wrist feature. (Joy Marks bought the newest enamel bangles — embellished lavender as a hostess gift.)

The table, filled with hand sculpted 22 karat dipped coins and talismans, was an invitation to pick what resonates to create your own. “They’re huge sellers, a chance to make personalized jewelry about what’s important to people and what they love,” said Dovenberg. Just imagine reaching for your gold dipped Southampton charm, with the sparkling waves, in New York during the dead of winter.
