On Friday, October 30th, the Parrish Art Museum is getting into the spooky spirit of the Halloween season during a special pre-All Hallows’ Eve Haunting Houses, as part of the Museum’s ongoing Architectural Sessions, co-presented by AIA Peconic.
“When series host Maziar Behrooz and I realized that the next Architectural Sessions would land on Halloween weekend, we decided to seize the opportunity to discuss ideas that haunt or linger throughout an architect’s practice,” shared Andrea Grover, Century Arts Foundation Curator of Special Projects at the Parrish Art Museum. “These hauntings are not of the blood and guts variety, but rather come from memories, obsessions, and encounters with peculiar structures and environments.”
At 6 p.m., host Maziar Behrooz will be joined by a remarkable panel that includes John Zissovici, Viola Rouhani, AIA, Jee Won Kim, and James Merrell, who will captivate attendees with an unearthly tale related to architecture. Each lecturer will divulge a spooky source of inspiration or particular influence that has “haunted” their practice or caused a distinctive impact on a specific project.
John Zissovici, associate professor of architecture at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, will discuss his design of a photographer’s studio that adjusts to shifting light settings. Viola Rouhani, of Stelle Lomont Rouhani Architects in Bridgehampton, will cover the significance of problem solving in regards to the design of a modern house in Amagansett. Jee Won Kim, Principal of Jee Won Kim Architects, P.C. in New York City, will speak about his work with artist Hans Breder on an installation. James Merrell, of James Merrell Architecture in Sag Harbor, will discuss the creation of a modern house located on the East End that references Palladian villas.
The guest speakers have credited the other architects, a teacher, an actor, and a small, old structure among their inspirations.
Admission to Haunting Houses is $10, but free for Parrish members, children, and students.
