“Landscape Pleasures” To Feature Shelter Island Garden Tours, Documentary, Reception And Online Lecture

The 36th annual Landscape Pleasures will encompass a combination of self-guided garden tours, an outdoor film screening, online discussion and more. The Parrish Art Museum’s yearly horticultural event will take place Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13.

“We are delighted to present tours of beautiful gardens on bucolic Shelter Island, a really special place here in the Hamptons,” said Landscape Pleasures Co-Chair and Parrish Trustee, Martha McLanahan. “We’re also grateful to the home owners, garden designers, speakers, supporters, and attendees for making this 36th Landscape Pleasures possible during a time when we all need to celebrate beauty and the natural world.”

The programming will commence on Friday, September 11 at 8 p.m. with a viewing of Thomas Riedelsheimer’s Leaning into the Wind—Andy Goldsworthy. Presented in collaboration with Hamptons Doc Fest, the documentary delves into the work of world-renowned land artist Andy Goldsworthy. Leaning into the Wind marks Riedelsheimer’s second film about Goldsworthy.

“In 2011, during a shoot in Scotland, I met Andy Goldsworthy again. It had been ten years since we released Rivers and Tides and we had not seen each other in the interim. From the very first moment I felt like no time has passed at all – it felt as though we had just waved farewell a few days before. It felt intimate immediately and I became aware of my never-ending interest in this man and his work. People who know Rivers and Tides think they know Andy Goldsworthy. And so we both felt that adding a new perspective to him and his work would be fascinating,” Riedelsheimer notes on the film’s website. “It has been a great time, an unforgettable experience. Leaning into the Wind offers a different angle, a different perspective, another perception on many levels. It is not only an expansion of the former film but stands by itself. Another moment in time, of Andy’s life – and of my life.”

There will be a special Field of Dreams Sculpture Exhibition tour and reception on Saturday, September 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. for Sponsor level and above ($400+) ticket purchasers. Attendees will enjoy guided tours of the Museum’s inaugural outdoor sculpture exhibition with special guest Mary Margaret Jones of Hargreaves Jones, Landscape Architects, who collaborated with the Parrish on the creation of three distinct Field of Dreams Meadow spaces, as well as a casual reception.

The Self-Guided Garden Tours will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tour-goers will explore private gardens on Shelter Island spearheaded by landscape designers Abby Clough Lawless of Farm Landscape Design, Vickie Cardaro of Buttercup Design Group, and Lisa Stamm. Attendees are required to wear masks at the featured outdoor oasis.

There will also be a recorded talk featuring Patrick Cullina, an award-winning horticulturist, landscape designer, photographer, lecturer, and organizational consultant, that will be available to view on Museum’s website.

Tickets to Landscape Pleasures are $200 for Museum Members and $250 for Non-Members, which includes access to the online presentations, garden tours, and Friday evening film.
